29 Ways To Stay Creative – Motion Graphics by TO-FU

In the midst of one of the greatest challenges I’ve ever faced, this simple reminder, that what I’ve been doing during my recovery from surgery is on point, confirms my path and the choices I’ve been making. 29 Ways To Stay Creative is a reminder to nourish ourselves, and prevent self abandonment.

This video has given me a great lift, I anticipate you will also find it affirming. My only substitute is green tea for coffee…

Thank you to my neighbor, Sean Tully, for the link to the video. He’s creative too. http://seantully.com/

Enjoy.

Open Fashion T-Shirt Design for The Museum of Ventura County’s Day of the Dead Celebration

For the past few months, I’ve been working closely with the Museum of Ventura County to create a design for their Dia de Los Muertos event.

Museum Of Ventura County Dia De Los Muertos T-Shirt By Pete Ippel
In this wearable art, I have taken the traditional imagery of the calaca (Mexican skeleton) and given it a contemporary flavor. The interactive garment allows the wearer to take their celebration of El Dia De Los Muertos in a new direction.

Once the shirt has served it’s purpose as clothing, the wearer is encouraged to cut out the printed image and create a decoration for their own altar by simply attaching the arms and legs to the torso.

My design is intentionally open, so that the new collaborator can add their own decorations, flowers, or write directly on the printed cloth. By working together, we both realize our creative vision, celebrating the spirit of our ancestors and loved ones. Truly a move toward Open Fashion.

Material Property II

Material Property II from Hypermodern – Pete Ippel on Vimeo.

While I was in the process of opening my studio space for the April version of First Fridays Ventura, I did not notice an accidental shift in my art storage area. One of the corners of a framed drawing distorted the stretched Tyvek of an ink painting by pressing the face of the painting laterally about two inches.

Because Tyvek does not have the exact same properties of canvas or paper, I was unable to moisten the painting to make it tighten to the stretcher.

I began to shake the painting and noticed that it snapped when moved abruptly forward and in reverse. Free play, curiosity, exploration, and intuition are what drive the creative act. In this video you have a window into my art practice.

An Open Letter To Studio Visitors From Pete Ippel

Welcome to my studio.

For more than ten years I have explored and combined traditional art materials with digital techniques demonstrating creative fluency. By moving with ease and grace through a variety of media, I focus on communicating ideas and I gain knowledge in the process.

I work intuitively and iteratively when creating art and often apply scientific methodology to my art practice with the rigor of a seasoned athlete.

By observing human behavior, asking generative questions, and analyzing information, I experience daily how a disciplined process leads to comprehension of complex data and ideas. I use my artistic sensibility to present my findings in unique and compelling ways.

I appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of the artist’s life. I aspire to travel, to teach, and to create while extending my exhibition record. Being nourished creatively while partaking in a challenging path is a delight, and I particularly relish learning along the way.

Art is the most practical, essential, and exciting field of work in the world today, and I look forward to sharing it with you. Take a card, check out my website, buy a piece. I guarantee that you will have never seen anything like my art before.

All my best,

Pete Ippel
